It's an example of a deep neck infection, which can be serious if not treated promptly.

Background
Ibrahim is a friendly and happy 13-year-old boy from a family without much money. He loves watching movies and wants to be a pilot when he grows up. Three years ago, he noticed a small, painless swelling under his chin. Over time, this swelling has grown bigger and now it sometimes hurts. The doctors say he has a Submental Abscess, which means he needs urgent medical treatment.
Medical history
Ibrahim was diagnosed with a submental abscess and admitted for surgery (incision and drainage of the abscess) on January 6, 2024. The procedure was successfully performed, and after a few days of recovery, he was discharged on January 10, 2024, with prescribed medications. He is currently showing significant improvement in his condition.
Prognosis
Treatment usually involves antibiotics to fight the infection and, in many cases, surgical drainage of the abscess to remove the pus. This procedure is typically done under local or general anesthesia. If left untreated, a submental abscess can lead to more serious complications, including the spread of the infection to other parts of the neck or body, airway obstruction, or sepsis (a potentially life-threatening response to infection).
