Severe malnutrition is a life-threatening condition that occurs when a person, especially a young child, suffers from a critical lack of essential nutrients and calories over a prolonged period. It manifests either as severe wasting, where the body breaks down its own muscles and tissues for energy until ribs and bones protrude, or as severe fluid swelling (edema) accompanied by a dangerously weakened immune system and vital organ damage. Malaria is a life-threatening blood disease caused by Plasmodium parasites that are transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, leading to high fevers, shaking chills, and severe flu-like symptoms.

Background
Usman Yahaya is a two-year-old boy living in a low-income, food-insecure rural settlement near Birniwa with his single mother, who struggles with limited resources and health literacy. Due to these financial and scheduling constraints, Usman is under-vaccinated, suffers from an inadequate diet, and lives in a poorly ventilated room. Income is 10,000 Naira only, they use stream water, pit latrine, and live with no electricity. It all started when his single mother became bedridden with severe malaria, two-year-old Usman was left alone for ten days causing him to starve, with a high fever and vomiting, causing his tiny body to waste away until his ribs showed and his eyes sank. Weak and refusing to eat, little Usman suffered silently until his still-ill mother managed to gather her remaining strength to carry her desperately sick boy to the nearest clinic. At the facility, he was evaluated and diagnosed with Severe Malnutrition and malaria.
Medical history
Usman, a 2-year-old boy, was admitted on the 26/4/2026 in critical condition with severe malaria, low blood sugar, and severe malnutrition. He received intravenous antimalarial treatment, sugar solution to correct his low blood sugar, therapeutic milk through a nasogastric tube, and intensive supportive care under close medical monitoring. Usman gradually improved during his hospital stay. By the third day, he was alert and opening his eyes, and by the sixth day, he was drinking from a cup and smiling. He was discharged on 02/05/2026 in stable condition to continue his recovery through a nutritional feeding program. His family remains deeply grateful for the lifesaving care that gave him a second chance. Thanks to Helpter Charity for sponsoring the treatment of Usman.
Prognosis
Usman presented with severe acute malnutrition complicated by malaria. He is terribly thin with visible ribs, sunken eyes, lethargic, febrile, vomiting, and refusing to eat or drink. This is a life-threatening emergency. He needs immediate treatment including antimalarial drugs, IV fluids, nutritional rehabilitation (therapeutic feeding), glucose monitoring, and close observation for complications such as hypoglycemia, shock, or organ failure. Prognosis depends on how quickly nutrition and infection are addressed. With prompt, comprehensive care, Usman can make a full recovery. If treatment had been delayed even another day, he could have died from starvation, dehydration, or severe malaria complications. Thanks to timely intervention, he now has a fighting chance.
