Severe malaria is a life-threatening condition, most commonly caused by Plasmodium falciparum, that can rapidly lead to organ dysfunction, coma, or death if not treated promptly. It develops when early malaria is not managed, progressing within days to complications such as severe anemia, cerebral malaria, metabolic acidosis, or kidney injury. Severe pneumonia is a serious lung infection where the air sacs become inflamed and filled with fluid or pus, causing difficulty in breathing, low oxygen levels, and possible organ failure, often requiring urgent hospital or ICU care with oxygen and antibiotics. Bacterial dermatitis is a skin infection caused mainly by Staphylococcus or Streptococcus, leading to redness, pain, pus formation, or crusting, usually treated with antibiotics.

Background
Justus is a young boy in Grade Two at a local public primary school. He is active, energetic, and enjoys playing football with other children during his free time. Although sometimes aggressive, he is social and enjoys interacting with friends both at school and within the community. He lives with his teenage mother in a remote village where they face significant financial hardship. His mother is the sole provider and survives through casual labor jobs that earn very little income, making it difficult to meet basic needs such as food, clothing, school supplies, shelter, and healthcare. His mother brought him to the facility with complaints of persistent cough, itchy eyes with discharge, skin rashes, difficulty breathing, joint pains, diarrhea, and general body weakness for three days. On arrival, Justus appeared weak, sickly, and in respiratory distress. He underwent clinical examination and laboratory investigations. Based on the findings, he was diagnosed with bacterial dermatitis, severe malaria, moderate anemia, eye infection, and severe pneumonia. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was admitted for treatment, close monitoring, and further medical management.
Medical history
Mother brought the child in the facility with complains of, Cough, difficult in breathing, joint pain, diarrhea loss of appetite, skin rushes, eye itching with discharge and general body weakness for the last three days. Based on findings, he was diagnosed with severe malaria, moderate anemia, severe pneumonia, bacterial dermatitis and eye infection. He was admitted for some days and responded well to medication and discharged when stable and in good condition.
Prognosis
Justus presented with multiple serious infections, including severe malaria, severe pneumonia, bacterial dermatitis, moderate anemia, and an eye infection, which significantly weakened his general condition. He required urgent admission for close monitoring, intravenous medication, supportive treatment, and further investigations. With timely medical intervention, adherence to treatment, good nutrition, and proper follow-up care, his condition is expected to improve gradually. However, delayed treatment or poor follow-up may place him at risk of recurrent infections and further health complications.
