About infections
Malaria is a life-threatening parasitic infection caused by Plasmodium species, transmitted through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. The most dangerous species is Plasmodium falciparum, which causes severe malaria if left untreated. Symptoms include high fever, chills, headache, body aches, vomiting, fatigue, and anemia. Helminthiasis refers to intestinal worm infections (such as roundworms, hookworms, or whipworms), which are extremely common in children living in poor sanitation conditions. Worms cause malnutrition, anemia, poor growth, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and further weaken the immune system. When a child has both malaria and helminthiasis simultaneously, the combination causes worsening anemia, prolonged weakness, delayed recovery, and increased risk of severe complications.

Background
Seven-year-old Haruna Ibrahim is a bright, curious boy from a poor farming village near Birniwa who dreams of going to school to become a teacher. He lives with his parents and three younger siblings, supported by his father's small millet crops and his mother's firewood sales, which barely cover food and leave nothing for healthcare. When Haruna developed a high fever and severe chills, his frequent illnesses took a dangerous turn, leaving him growing weaker by the day while his family could not afford medicine. Seven-year-old Haruna Ibrahim was brought to Adari Medical Clinic after developing a high fever, severe chills, vomiting, and extreme weakness following suspected mosquito bites while playing outside. Upon examination, he was pale, lethargic, and running a dangerous 39.6°C fever, with lab tests confirming both moderate Malaria and an intestinal Helminthiasis/worm infection.
Medical history
Haruna was brought to Adari Medical Clinic in critical condition with severe malaria, dehydration, and intestinal worm infestation. He received prompt treatment with intravenous artesunate, fluids, fever management, and deworming medication, leading to steady improvement over five days. His fever resolved, he regained his appetite and strength, and was discharged in stable condition. His parents expressed heartfelt gratitude to Helpster Charity Foundation for providing the lifesaving care that restored their son's health.
Prognosis
Haruna Ibrahim, a seven-year-old boy, presented with confirmed Plasmodium falciparum malaria (2.4% parasitemia) and intestinal helminthiasis. On admission, he had high fever (39.6°C), chills, severe headache, body aches, vomiting, weakness, pallor, and lethargy. He had no signs of severe malaria (no cerebral symptoms, no respiratory distress, no severe anemia, no jaundice). He was diagnosed with uncomplicated moderate malaria and helminthiasis. He needed hospitalization for intravenous artesunate, followed by oral artemether-lumefantrine, oral deworming medication, intravenous fluids for hydration, antipyretics for fever, and nutritional support. Prognosis is excellent with prompt treatment. Full recovery is expected without long-term complications. If treatment had been delayed, he would have risked severe malaria, cerebral malaria, severe anemia, or death. The deworming medication will also improve his nutrition and growth over time.
