Opheliah is a 3-year-old girl and the third born in a family of four children. Her mother relies on small-scale farming as the main source of income, earning less than KSh 3,200 per month, which is used to meet the family’s basic needs. They live in a two-room rented house, share a pit latrine with neighbours, and depend on a well for drinking water, increasing exposure to sanitation and hygiene-related health risks. Despite these challenges, the family continues to work hard to support their children. Opheliah developed high fever, chest pain, and persistent cough for three days. Her condition progressively worsened, with increasing weakness, reduced activity, poor feeding, irritability, and difficulty sleeping, indicating significant illness requiring urgent medical attention. She appeared generally unwell and exhausted at home, prompting concern from her caregiver. Although her mother was financially constrained and unable to afford treatment, she brought Opheliah to Mechimeru Hospital for care. On arrival, she explained her situation to the attending doctor, who assured her that Opheliah would receive free treatment through Helpster Charity.

Opheliah’s treatment for Severe Pneumonia would involve immediate medical care to treat the lung infection and stabilize her breathing. At the health facility, healthcare providers would administer antibiotics to fight the infection, provide fever-reducing medication, and give fluids and nutritional support to help restore her strength and prevent dehydration. If she experiences difficulty breathing or low oxygen levels, oxygen therapy may also be provided to support her lungs while they recover. Because Opheliah is still very young, she would be closely monitored to ensure that her condition improves and complications are prevented. With timely and proper treatment, she is expected to gradually recover, breathe more comfortably, regain her energy and appetite, and continue with normal growth and childhood activities in good health.

Opheliah presented with high fever, persistent cough, chest pain, reduced feeding, and marked lethargy and was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. She required urgent admission with oxygen therapy, antibiotics, and supportive care. Despite initial severity at presentation, her response to treatment has been encouraging, with improved breathing pattern, reduced fever, and better feeding. She remains under close observation, and her clinical course is progressing positively with no further deterioration noted.
