Severe pneumonia is a life-threatening lung infection where inflammation causes the tiny air sacs (alveoli) to fill with fluid or pus. This makes it difficult for oxygen to enter the bloodstream. It is a medical emergency requiring immediate hospitalization for oxygen therapy, IV antibiotics, or mechanical ventilation while Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluid than it takes in. When this happens, your body lacks the essential water and electrolytes needed to function normally. Anyone can experience it, but it is especially dangerous for infants, young children, and older adults.

Background
Miles is a three-month-old baby from a humble rural family. He is cheerful, active, and enjoys smiling and responding to the people around him. Following his 17-year-old mother's return to school to continue her education, Miles has been under the care of his grandmother, a small-scale farmer who works tirelessly to provide for the family's basic needs despite limited financial resources. Her modest income often makes it difficult to meet healthcare and other essential expenses. Miles was rushed to the hospital by his grandmother after developing difficulty in breathing, a persistent cough, repeated vomiting, high fever, poor feeding, and excessive crying, particularly at night, for two days. As his condition worsened, he became increasingly weak, lethargic, and less responsive than usual. He struggled to breastfeed, appeared dehydrated, and his breathing became rapid and labored, raising concern for a serious illness. Following thorough clinical assessment and laboratory investigations, he was diagnosed with severe pneumonia complicated by dehydration. Owing to the severity of his condition, Miles was immediately admitted for urgent treatment, close monitoring, supportive care, and further investigations.
Medical history
Miles was brought to the hospital by his grandmother, presenting with; difficult in breathing, cough, fever, vomiting everything and crying a lot for the last two days. On examination and laboratory investigation, he was diagnosed with, severe pneumonia and dehydration. Was given; I.v Xpen , I.v Gentamicin, I.v Hydrocortisone and IV paracetamol. He responded well to medication and discharged on good condition.
Prognosis
Miles presented with severe pneumonia complicated by severe dehydration, a combination that can rapidly become life-threatening in young infants because it impairs breathing, reduces oxygen delivery, and can lead to shock if not treated promptly. Immediate hospitalization, intravenous fluids, appropriate antibiotics, and close monitoring were essential to stabilize his condition and prevent serious complications such as respiratory failure or sepsis. Following treatment, Miles is showing gradual clinical improvement. His prognosis is favourable
