Baby Elma Islam is a tiny and precious newborn whose arrival brought great joy to her parents, Md. Rubel Hossain and Sharmin Akter, and her siblings, Raisa and Takrim. Her father earns only about BDT 9,500 per month as a CNG auto-rickshaw driver and is the sole provider for their six-member family, making the cost of NICU care and specialized treatment completely beyond their means. Born prematurely at just 33 weeks of gestation and weighing only 1.8 kg, Elma developed severe breathing difficulties shortly after birth and was diagnosed with Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS), prematurity, and low birth weight, placing her fragile life in immediate danger. The family learned about Helpster Charity through volunteer Md. Al Amin, who guided them toward life-saving support when they had nowhere else to turn. Without urgent NICU treatment, oxygen support, and continuous monitoring, Baby of Elma could suffer severe oxygen deprivation, life-threatening infections, developmental complications, or even death.

Baby Elma Islam, a premature newborn born at 33 weeks of gestation with a birth weight of only 1.8 kg, was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Famous Specialized Hospital & Trauma Center, Chandpur, on 22.05.2026 with severe Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) and complications related to prematurity. Under the expert supervision of Dr. Md. Bajmul Hasan, MBBS, BCS (Health), MD (Pediatrics) and the dedicated NICU team, Elma received comprehensive life-saving treatment, including ventilator support, oxygen therapy, intensive monitoring, and specialized neonatal care. The medical team worked tirelessly for 13 days, utilizing every available treatment option in an effort to stabilize her fragile condition and give her the best possible chance of survival. Despite their unwavering commitment and the highest level of medical care, Elma's condition remained critical due to the extreme severity of her prematurity and underdeveloped lungs. Sadly, she passed away on 03.06.2026. Although the outcome was heartbreaking, the family is deeply grateful that every possible effort was made to save their beloved daughter, and they sincerely appreciate the compassion, dedication, and support provided by the hospital staff and Helpster Charity throughout this difficult journey.

According to Dr. Md. Najmul Hasan, MBBS, BCS (Health), MD (Paediatrics) NICU Consultant at Famous Specialized Hospital & Trauma Center, Elma required immediate intensive neonatal care, including ventilator support, oxygen therapy, thermal regulation, nutritional support, infection prevention, and continuous monitoring by an experienced NICU team. The medical staff followed internationally accepted neonatal treatment protocols and exhausted every available option to stabilize her condition. Premature infants with severe Respiratory Distress Syndrome have a very high risk of respiratory failure and multiple organ complications despite receiving the best possible care. While many premature babies recover successfully with prolonged NICU treatment, Elma's lungs remained too immature to sustain her life. Her passing is a heartbreaking reminder of the challenges faced by extremely vulnerable newborns and highlights the urgent need for continued support for critically ill infants whose survival depends on timely specialized neonatal care.
