Queen Shania R., 6

Queen is the second last born in a family of seven children living with their single mother in a two-room mud-walled house. Her mother survives through casual labor and menial jobs to provide for the family despite significant financial hardship. When healthy, Queen enjoys reading books and playing with other children. According to her mother, the incident began during school breaktime when another child accidentally kicked Queen while playing football. Later that evening, her mother noticed that Queen’s face appeared swollen and puffy, and she had started vomiting. As the night progressed, she became weak, restless, complained of abdominal discomfort, and lost her usual appetite and playfulness. Her mother became more alarmed when Queen later passed blood-stained urine and appeared increasingly unwell and fatigued. Concerned about her worsening condition, she rushed her to Siaya County Referral Hospital the following morning for further evaluation and treatment. After medical assessment and investigations, Queen was diagnosed with pyelonephritis.

Queen was brought to the hospital with complaints of abdominal pains, vomiting, facial puffiness and bloody urine , she was diagnosed with acute kidney infection which warranted admission. While in the ward she was administered IV ceftriaxone, pcm fortified ringers among other drugs, these she was responsive to and was eventually discharged on orals. A follow up clinic was booked for her to review her progress

The medical prognosis for a 6-year-old diagnosed with pyelonephritis (a severe upper urinary tract infection) and Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is generally very good, with most children making a full recovery of kidney function when treated promptly with intravenous antibiotics and fluids. Queen was brought to the hospital in time , received prompt medical intervention and she is expected to make a full recovery
