Vanaz is the only child of his teenage parents and lives with them in a modest two-roomed mud-walled house. His mother dropped out of school while in Form Three due to financial challenges. Both parents rely on subsistence farming for their livelihood and have no stable source of income, often struggling to meet their daily needs. According to his mother, Vanaz had been in good health until she noticed that he had developed a fever. Shortly afterward, he began experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, which persisted for two days. Hoping his condition would improve, his mother administered over-the-counter medication, but there was no noticeable improvement. Concerned by his worsening condition, she took him to a nearby health centre for medical attention. Following assessment and initial management, he was referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital for further evaluation and specialized care.

Vanaz was brought to the hospital with complaints of abdominal pains , vomiting and diarrhoea. He was diagnosed with gastroenteritis and severe dehydration which required urgent admission. While in the ward he was administered zinc sulphate, ORS among other drugs. He responded well to medication and was eventually discharged on orals.

Vanaz was diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis complicated by severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. The prolonged vomiting and diarrhea resulted in significant fluid and mineral losses, placing him at risk of serious complications if left untreated. Prompt medical intervention, including fluid replacement, correction of electrolyte abnormalities, and supportive care, was essential to stabilize his condition. A full recovery is expected, with no long-term complications anticipated.
