Post meningitic hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is the excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within cavities of a child's brain called ventricles. This excess fluid causes the child's ventricles to widen, which puts harmful press on the tissues of the child's brain.

Background

Ismail is the 6th child of his mother, married in a monogamous setting, father is 38yr old petty trader and mother a full house wife. Ismail was doing well until 3 months ago when his head was noticed to be increasing in size with convulsion episodes. He is diagnosed of postmeningitic hydrocephalus with possibility of brain tumour. He had VP shunt, now awaiting tumour resection. The parents were only able to pay for registration.

Prognosis

The patient was presented to our facility with progressive enlargement of the head of 3 months and recurrent vomiting of a day. The symptoms were preceded by high grade and continuous fever which was associated with several episodes of seizure and recurrent effortless vomiting. Clinical examination revealed a lethargic male infant with 8.7 kg weight, OFC-54 cm with craniofacial disproportion, sunset eyes, widely patent and bulging anterior fontanel (4*8)cm and suture diathesis. He has a generalised hypotonia. Assessment of post meningitic hydrocephalus was made.
