Stephen M., 7

Stephen Maganga is a 7-year-old boy and the second-born in a family of three children. He lives with his grandmother, who earns a living by selling bananas at the local marketplace, and his two siblings. Stephen attends a nearby primary school and enjoys playing football with his friends. He dreams of becoming an engineer one day because he is fascinated by the tall buildings he sees in cities and hopes to help construct similar structures in the future. Stephen was brought to the hospital with a sudden onset of a productive cough that progressively worsened over several days. The cough was accompanied by chest pain, recurrent episodes of fever that were only temporarily relieved by paracetamol, and increasing difficulty in breathing. As his illness progressed, he became weak, lost his appetite, and was unable to participate in his usual activities. His grandmother also noticed that he was breathing rapidly, appeared tired most of the time, and had difficulty sleeping due to persistent coughing and shortness of breath. Concerned by his worsening condition, his grandmother initially tried home remedies, hoping he would improve. However, despite these efforts, Stephen's symptoms continued to deteriorate, prompting her to seek medical attention. Upon arrival at the hospital, he appeared ill and required urgent assessment and treatment for his respiratory condition.

Stephen Maganga was admitted with a short history of hotness of body, cough productive and progressive pleuritic chest pain.On examination crackle heard on the left lung upper lobe and febrile.He was managed on IV antibiotics, analgesia,oral amoxiclav and ibuprofen . Stephen Maganga is now feeling better and back to his normal activities.

Stephen Maganga was diagnosed with pneumonia and received appropriate treatment.Clinical improvement was noted with reduction of fever, decreased cough,and return of normal feeding and activity levels.The child responded well to treatment and is now stable. Prognosis is good,continued adherence to prescribed medication, adequate nutrition and hydration as advised will support full recovery
