Severe malaria is a life-threatening medical emergency caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite that occurs when infections are complicated by serious organ dysfunction or metabolic abnormalities. Common clinical manifestations include cerebral malaria, severe anemia, acute kidney injury, and respiratory distress, all of which carry an exceptionally high risk of mortality without immediate intravenous antimalarial treatment. Anemia is a condition in which the level of haemoglobin or red blood cells is significantly reduced, impairing the blood's ability to carry oxygen to the body's tissues

Background
Grace Solomon is a year old child who is sick and was rushed to the facility by her mother, Mrs Esther Solomon. Grace is the last child of four children. The father is welder who because of his habitual drunk doesn't go to work and barely provides for the family. Mrs Solomon is the bread winner of the family. She produces kulikuli to support her family. She barely makes around 20,000 monthly. They all live in a one room apartment. Grace Solomon and other two siblings have been falling ill in the past seven days. She has been suffering from general weakness, fever and sometimes chills. The mother had tried to offer home treatment with some malaria drugs and paracetamol but there was no improvement. She was then brought to the facility. Upon observation, she looking weak and pale. Immediately she was referred to the lab for investigation. She was diagnosed with Severe Malaria and Anemia.
Medical history
Grace Solomon 14 months old child was diagnosed with Severe malaria and anemia. She immediately admitted treated with anti malaria and had a blood transfusion to cure the anemia. She tolerated the whole treatment and showed vital signs of recovery. She has been discharged and is recovering well.
Prognosis
Severe malaria complicated by anaemia in a Grace Solomon, a 14 month-old child is a serious and potentially fatal condition. The major complications of concurrent severe malaria and anemia include profound tissue hypoxia, metabolic acidosis, and high-output heart failure due to the critical shortage of oxygen-carrying red blood cells. This lethal combination can rapidly trigger multi-organ dysfunction, causing acute respiratory distress syndrome, acute kidney injury, and permanent neurological damage. Without immediate emergency blood transfusions and intravenous antimalarial therapy, the condition carries an extremely high risk of mortality. The prognosis for concurrent severe malaria and profound anemia is highly critical, carrying a high risk of rapid clinical deterioration and death if treatment is delayed. However, prompt intervention with intravenous artesunate and immediate blood transfusions significantly improves survival rates, though some patients may still face prolonged recovery or lasting neurological deficits.
