Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About infections
An upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) triggers a vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) by igniting a systemic inflammatory response that increases the adhesiveness of blood vessel walls and immune cells. The resulting fever and dehydration thicken the blood, while infection-induced stress lowers oxygen levels, causing hemoglobin to polymerize and warp red cells into rigid sickles. These deformed cells attach to activated white blood cells and the vascular lining, clogging capillaries and creating severe ischemic pain. Without prompt intervention, this specific upper-respiratory trigger also carries a high risk of progressing into acute chest syndrome, a life-threatening lung complication.

Background
Abdulrahman is a 3 year old male child who is currently staying with his parents and siblings. He is the last child. Mother is a house wife and the father is a petty trader. Providing for the the family has been very difficult and children hardly go to school. They have a 2 rooms, borehole, electricity and a pit toilet. Monthly income is 10000. Abdulrahman is a sickle cell patient presenting with pain on his digits and major joints of 2 days duration, his stable packed cell volume is said to be 30% and his last PCV done is 22%. He is currently having upper respiratory tract infection which has triggered the crisis. A preschool child in painful distress (irritable), with tender, swollen digits, pale with tinge of jaundice, Diagnosis of Vasoocclusive crisis in Sickle cell disease crisis triggered by upper respiratory tract infection was made. The parent lacked the money for the treatment that is why they contacted Helpster Charity for the medical support.
Medical history
Abdulrahman is a sickle cell patient presenting with pain on his digits and major joints of 2 days duration, his stable packed cell volume is said to be 30% and his last PCV done is 22%. He is currently having upper respiratory tract infection which has triggered the crisis. Patient was diagnosed with SCD triggered by upper respiratory tract infection. Abdulrahman was admitted and treated accordingly, he was later transfused 1 pint of red blood cell, he became stable and was discharged, no more pains on his digits. They sent gratitude to Helpster Charity and the entire team for the medical support.
Prognosis
The patient is experiencing a sickle cell disease crisis precipitated by an upper respiratory tract infection. The infection has contributed to increased sickling and vaso-occlusive symptoms. Management includes treatment of the underlying infection, adequate hydration, pain control, and close monitoring for complications. An infection-triggered VOC has a good short-term prognosis with rapid hydration and pain management, usually resolving within 3 to 7 days.
