An inguinal hernia is a condition in which a portion of the intestine or abdominal tissue protrudes through a weakened or torn area in the lower abdominal wall, typically in the groin area. A person with an inguinal hernia typically experiences a noticeable bulge or lump in the groin area. This bulge can be painful or uncomfortable, especially when lifting, coughing, or straining. Some individuals might also feel aching or burning sensations around the hernia. In certain cases, the hernia can lead to symptoms like groin pain, a feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen, and discomfort.

Background
Yunus is a friendly 11-year-old whose parent is a small-time trader. He loves playing soccer and dreams of being an international football player. Four years ago, he developed a swelling in his scrotum that was not normal. It can be pushed back but causes mild pain, discomfort, and a heavy feeling. He was diagnosed with an Inguinal Hernia and is now waiting to have surgery (Herniorraphy) to fix it.
Medical history
Yunus visited UMD Medical Clinic with complaints of scrotal swelling that began around 3 years ago. Initially small, it gradually increased in size and caused pain, heaviness, and discomfort. He was diagnosed with hydrocele and scheduled for surgery on February 22, 2024. The surgery was successful, and post-operative treatment was provided. Yunus was discharged on February 24, 2024, and is now free from pain.
Prognosis
If left untreated, inguinal hernias can lead to complications such as bowel obstruction, strangulation (where blood supply to the herniated tissue is cut off), and significant pain or discomfort. Surgery is the most common treatment for inguinal hernias to repair the weakened area and prevent these potential complications.
