Kennedy Otieno O., 14

Kennedy is a Grade 9 student at Alara School and the second-born boy in his family. He lives with his maternal grandfather, an elderly widower with no stable source of income. Kennedy moved in with him partly to provide companionship and assist with household chores. Despite their difficult circumstances, he remains cheerful and hardworking. He enjoys playing football and cooking and dreams of becoming a professional footballer in the future. Kennedy had generally been healthy until one evening when he developed abdominal pain after eating a wild fruit from the bush. His grandfather initially prepared a local herbal remedy hoping to relieve the discomfort, but Kennedy did not improve and later developed diarrhoea. Concerned about his worsening condition, his grandfather sought assistance from their Community Health Promoter, who referred Kennedy to the health facility for assessment and treatment. He responded well to medical care and has since recovered. Kennedy has returned to school and is once again able to help his grandfather with daily activities.

Kennedy was brought in to the facility with history of diarrhea after being given some herbal medicine by the grandfather with no good results.He was commenced on Iv metronidazole and Iv Ceftriaxone was prescribed too to clear any underlying infection since he was complaining of headache which was on and off.Kennedy received Iv fluids to replace the lost electrolytes during vomitting and diarrhea and also antihimatinics.His prognosis became fair till he was discharged with oral medication in a stable condition to continue the treatment at home.He has fully recovered and has gone back to his normal duties of helping the grandfather and has resumed his studies too.

Kennedy’s acute gastroenteritis was complicated by severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, making his condition potentially life-threatening without prompt treatment. He required urgent fluid and electrolyte replacement, treatment of the underlying illness and close monitoring. He is responding well to management, with resolution of diarrhoea and improvement in hydration and general condition.
