Fatima was diagnosed with Hirschsprung Disease, a serious congenital condition that had progressed to an emergency due to prolonged bowel obstruction. In this disorder, a portion of the intestine lacks the nerve cells required to move stool through the bowel. As a result, stool becomes trapped, causing severe constipation, progressive abdominal swelling, and increasing abdominal pain. At the time of presentation, Fatima's condition had become critical, with significant abdominal distension and an inability to pass stool effectively. The prolonged obstruction placed her at immediate risk of life-threatening complications, including intestinal perforation, severe infection (Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis), sepsis, dehydration, and malnutrition. The diagnosis explained her long history of constipation since infancy and the worsening abdominal symptoms that led to her emergency admission. Due to the severity of the bowel obstruction and the risk of rapid deterioration, urgent surgical management was required to relieve the obstruction and prevent further complications. Immediate medical intervention was essential to save her life and restore normal bowel function.

Background
Fatima is a 7 year old child number 2,who lost her mother in a tragic car accident. Her father Musa is a beans seller who earns just 5000 Naira per month. was taken to the hospital in a critical condition after developing severe abdominal swelling, persistent constipation, and worsening abdominal pain. According to her family, she had struggled with difficulty passing stool since infancy. Upon assessment and investigations, she was diagnosed with Hirshsprung disease. Due to the urgency of her condition, she was admitted for intensive monitoring and preparation for corrective surgery. Prompt medical intervention was necessary to relieve the obstruction, prevent further deterioration
Prognosis
Doctor’s Opinion The attending medical team determined that Fatima's condition was serious and required urgent surgical intervention. Hirschsprung disease had caused a long-standing obstruction in her bowel, resulting in severe constipation, abdominal distension, and increasing discomfort. Prognosis - is good if intervention is done early to avoid complications. Without timely treatment, she was at risk of developing life-threatening complications such as intestinal perforation, severe infection (enterocolitis), malnutrition, and bowel failure. Following comprehensive evaluation, the doctors recommended a staged surgical approach to remove or bypass the affected segment of the intestine and restore normal bowel function. The team was optimistic that with prompt surgery, appropriate postoperative care, and close follow-up, Fatima would have a significant improvement in her health and quality of life. Prognosis: Fatima's prognosis is good, provided she receives the planned surgical treatment and continues with regular medical follow-up. Most children with Hirschsprung disease recover well after surgery and are able to achieve normal or near-normal bowel function. However, careful monitoring will be necessary to detect and manage any postoperative complications and ensure healthy growth and development.
