Prolonged obstructed labour with foetal distress occurs when childbirth is delayed because the baby cannot pass through the birth canal, causing danger to both mother and baby. Labour lasts much longer than normal despite strong contractions, often due to a mismatch between the baby's size and the mother's pelvis or abnormal fetal position. Foetal distress means the baby is not receiving enough oxygen, which may be detected by an abnormal fetal heart rate or passage of meconium. Symptoms may include severe maternal exhaustion, dehydration, abdominal pain, and slow or no progress in labour. It is an obstetric emergency that requires prompt medical intervention, often assisted delivery or emergency caesarean section, to prevent serious complications.

Background
Habiba Umar is a 19-year-old woman who lives with her husband, Musa, in Kukkuri Village. They survive on the small income Musa earns as a local farmer, and the family lives in a simple single-room mud house. Life has been very difficult for them, as they often struggle to afford enough food, healthcare, and other basic needs. During her pregnancy, Habiba developed prolonged obstructed labour and was brought to Ayaji Medical and Diagnostic Center as an obstetric emergency. On arrival, she was in pain, weak, and exhausted, while the baby showed signs of foetal distress. She was diagnosed with prolonged obstructed labour complicated by foetal distress and was prepared for an emergency caesarean section.
Medical history
Habiba, a 19-year-old woman, was admitted with prolonged obstructed labour complicated by foetal distress, a serious obstetric emergency requiring immediate intervention to protect both mother and baby. She was promptly stabilized with intravenous fluids to maintain hydration and circulation, while oxygen therapy was provided to support maternal and foetal oxygenation. She received IV Ceftriaxone and Metronidazole to reduce the risk of infection associated with prolonged labour. Her vital signs and foetal heart rate were closely monitored, and appropriate pain management was provided. She made steady progress following surgery, with improved strength, good tolerance of feeding, and no significant postoperative complications. Both mother and baby remained stable and were discharged home with advice on wound care, adequate nutrition, postnatal monitoring, medication adherence, and follow-up care.
Prognosis
Doctor’s Opinion and Prognosis Habiba presented with prolonged obstructed labour complicated by foetal distress, which is a life-threatening obstetric emergency requiring urgent intervention. She needs immediate surgical delivery, close monitoring, and supportive care to protect both mother and baby from serious complications such as uterine rupture, severe bleeding, infection, birth asphyxia, or death. With prompt treatment and proper follow-up care, the prognosis is cautiously good, and she is expected to recover well; however, without treatment, the condition could become fatal for both mother and child
