Shoaib H., 10

Shoaib Hossen is a 10-year-old boy who lives with his parents and older brother. They are a very poor family and don't own any land. Shoaib is currently in the second grade at a government primary school in their area. He's a good student and enjoys playing football. Shoaib's parents have a big dream for him – they want him to grow up and become a soldier to help keep their country safe. However, right now, Shoaib is in a lot of pain and needs to have an urgent appendectomy surgery to remove his appendix.

Shoaib developed a mass in his appendix and was advised to take antibiotics. After enduring two weeks of abdominal pain, he needed to undergo an open abdominal surgery. This procedure, performed under spinal anesthesia, paralyzes the patient from the waist down. The surgery involved making an incision on the right side of the lower abdomen, where the appendix is located. The appendix was then removed and the incision was closed with dissolvable stitches. The surgery was successful. The surgical thread used for suturing should be removed seven to ten days post-operation. Shoaib’s father commented, “The surgery went successfully, with no complications. We were greatly relieved. Shoaib stayed in the hospital for five days before being discharged.” The following week, Dr. Arif, the MD and Deputy Director of Polly Akota Unnayan Sanstha (RUDO), organized a home visit to Shoaib’s house. Shoaib’s mother expressed her joy: “We are so happy now. We can continue our normal life. Our child feels comfortable, with no pain or fever. He can sleep and eat well. Shoaib has persistent vomiting with fever and severe abdominal pain. After emergency treatment, abdominal ultrasound confirmed appendicitis. If appendicitis is left untreated, the appendix may swell and eventually burst. A ruptured appendix is a serious problem that can lead to death. On examination of Schwaib's abdomen, a lump of appendix was noted.
