Eunice A., 23

Eunice is a young mother who lives with her spouse and child in a single-room mud-walled house. She completed secondary school but was unable to pursue tertiary education because of financial constraints. Her husband left school in Class 8 and works as an unskilled laborer at construction sites whenever work is available. As Eunice has no source of income, the family depends entirely on her husband's irregular earnings. Despite these challenges, she dreams of becoming a teacher one day. Eunice had previously experienced regular menstrual cycles until she developed abnormal vaginal bleeding that persisted for nearly two months. She initially sought treatment at a nearby health centre, where the condition was attributed to a hormonal imbalance. However, after taking the prescribed medication, she developed severe bleeding, soaking up to eight sanitary pads daily. As the bleeding continued, she became increasingly weak and fatigued. Further evaluation at another health facility confirmed a miscarriage complicated by severe anemia due to excessive blood loss, and she was urgently referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital. Fearing she could not afford treatment, Eunice hesitated to seek care until a healthcare worker informed her about Helpster Charity, enabling her to access the lifesaving treatment she urgently required.

Eunice was brought to the hospital with complaints of abdominal pains, vaginal bleeds, and body weakness. She was diagnosed with severe anemia following a miscarriage, which warranted admission into the ward. She was transfused blood and administered Flagyl, doxycycline, among other drugs to which she was tolerant. She was eventually discharged on orals. A follow-up clinic was also booked for her to check on her progress

Eunice presented with severe anemia resulting from prolonged bleeding following an incomplete abortion, a condition that required urgent intervention. She underwent Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) to remove the retained pregnancy tissue, control the bleeding, and prevent further complications such as infection and worsening blood loss. Following the procedure, she received supportive treatment, including management of anemia and close observation. Her condition improved steadily with treatment. The prognosis is good provided she attends follow-up appointments, adheres to medical advice, receives adequate nutritional support and iron supplementation, and seeks early medical care in future pregnancies or if abnormal bleeding recurs.
