Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?
When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About emergency care
Low birth weight (LBW) is defined as a newborn weighing less than 2,500 grams (5.5 pounds), regardless of gestational age. It is primarily caused by preterm birth (before 37 weeks of pregnancy) and intrauterine growth restriction, and it places infants at a higher risk for immediate complications and long-term developmental challenges. Dehydration in newborns occurs when a baby loses more fluids than they take in, primarily due to insufficient breast milk or formula intake, or excessive fluid loss from vomiting or diarrhea. It is a medical emergency that can become life-threatening quickly if left untreateed. Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is a life-threatening condition caused by a severe lack of energy, protein, and micronutrients. It is defined by a very low weight-for-height, bilateral pitting edema (swelling of both feet), or a severely low Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC)

Background
Chris is the youngest child in a family of four children and lives with his parents and siblings in a two-room mud-walled house. Both of his parents are peasant farmers who rely on subsistence farming and occasional casual labor to provide for the family's basic needs. Their limited income makes it difficult to access specialized healthcare and other essential services. Chris was delivered by Caesarean section as the second twin after an unexpected intraoperative discovery of the pregnancy within the pouch of Douglas. At birth, he was noted to have a low birth weight, marked wasting, clinical dehydration, and a gaunt appearance consistent with severe intrauterine growth restriction and poor nutritional status. Owing to his fragile condition and high risk of neonatal complications, he was immediately admitted to the Newborn Unit for specialized care, including stabilization, supportive management, close monitoring, and nutritional support. His condition required continuous observation to optimize his growth and prevent life-threatening complications associated with prematurity and low birth weight.
Medical history
Brighton was born with low birth weight, he was also malnourished and dehydrated, he was admitted the the new born unit for management. While in the ward he was constantly monitored, kept warm, he was fed via Ng tube on baby formula. He was able to recover and put on some weight, eventually he was discharged on orals , a follow up clinic was booked for him.
Prognosis
Chris was born with low birth weight, marked wasting, malnutrition, and dehydration, placing him at high risk of serious neonatal complications. His condition required immediate admission to the Newborn Unit for specialized care, including nutritional rehabilitation, fluid and electrolyte correction, temperature regulation, and close clinical monitoring. Although his initial prognosis was guarded because of his fragile condition, early intervention significantly improved his chances of survival. With continued nutritional support, regular follow-up, and appropriate neonatal care, Chris is expected to achieve satisfactory growth and development while reducing the risk of long-term complications.
