Amina was diagnosed with Severe Malaria Complicated by Anemia and Acute Diarrheal Disease (ADD) in Pregnancy. Severe malaria is a serious infection caused by malaria parasites transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. During pregnancy, malaria can be particularly dangerous because it affects both the mother and the unborn baby. It may cause high fever, severe weakness, headache, loss of appetite, and complications such as miscarriage, preterm labor, and fetal distress. The malaria infection led to anemia, a condition in which the number of healthy red blood cells is reduced. This occurs because malaria parasites destroy red blood cells, resulting in paleness, fatigue, dizziness, weakness, and reduced oxygen supply to the body's organs and tissues. Amina also suffered from Acute Diarrheal Disease (ADD), a condition characterized by frequent loose or watery stools. This can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, weakness, and nutritional deficiencies if not treated promptly. The combination of severe malaria, anemia, and acute diarrheal disease made Amina’s condition particularly serious, placing both her health and the pregnancy at risk.

Background
Amina is a 24-year-old woman living in Garin Alkali Village with her husband. She is a full-time housewife and depends entirely on her husband for the family's survival. Her husband works as a shoe shiner, earning approximately ₦9,000, an income that is barely sufficient to cover their daily needs. The couple lives in a small single-room house and faces constant financial challenges. With limited resources, they often struggle to afford food, healthcare, and other basic necessities. When Amina became seriously ill during pregnancy, the family was unable to afford the medical care she urgently needed. Her illness placed both her life and that of her unborn baby at risk, creating fear and uncertainty for the household. She was brought to the hospital with complaints of high fever, severe weakness, dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, and generalized body pains. She also appeared pale and fatigued, raising concerns about anemia. Her symptoms had progressively worsened, making it difficult for her to perform her daily activities. Following clinical assessment and laboratory investigations, she was diagnosed with Severe Malaria Complicated by Anemia and Acute Diarrheal Disease (ADD) in Pregnancy.
Medical history
Amina was admitted for emergency management of severe malaria complicated by anemia and acute diarrheal disease during pregnancy. She was closely monitored throughout her admission to ensure the safety of both her and her unborn baby. For the treatment of severe malaria, she received intravenous Artesunate, followed by a complete course of Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) once her condition stabilized. She was also given Paracetamol to control fever and relieve discomfort. To manage dehydration caused by acute diarrhea, Amina received intravenous fluids and Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) to replace lost fluids and electrolytes. Zinc supplements were administered to aid recovery from the diarrheal illness and support her overall health. Due to the anemia, she was started on iron supplements (haematinics) and folic acid to improve her blood level and support the healthy development of her pregnancy. Nutritional support and counseling were also provided to help restore her strength and prevent further complications. During treatment, her fever subsided, the diarrhea resolved, her energy levels improved, and her blood count gradually increased. Regular monitoring confirmed that both mother and baby remained stable. By the time of discharge, Amina had recovered well and was in stable condition. She was advised to continue her medications, attend regular antenatal clinic visits, maintain adequate hydration and nutrition, and return for follow-up assessments. With continued care, she is expected to have a healthy recovery and a favorable pregnancy outcome.
Prognosis
Opinion and Prognosis Amina was diagnosed with severe malaria complicated by anemia and acute diarrheal disease (ADD) during pregnancy, a high-risk condition that required urgent medical attention. The severe malaria caused significant destruction of red blood cells, leading to anemia, while the acute diarrhea resulted in dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Together, these conditions posed a serious threat to both the mother and her unborn baby. Without prompt treatment, Amina was at risk of severe maternal illness, miscarriage, preterm labor, fetal distress, and other life-threatening complications. She was therefore admitted for intensive management, including antimalarial therapy, rehydration, treatment of anemia, and close monitoring of the pregnancy. Amina responded well to treatment, with gradual resolution of fever and diarrhea, improvement in her blood level, and stabilization of her overall condition. Both maternal and fetal well-being improved during the course of treatment. The prognosis is favorable due to the timely diagnosis and effective medical intervention. With continued antenatal care, adherence to prescribed medications, proper nutrition, and regular follow-up visits, Amina is expected to recover fully and continue her pregnancy safely. Close monitoring remains important to ensure the ongoing health of both mother and baby.
