Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?
When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About infections
Severe malaria is a life-threatening complication of Plasmodium falciparum infection characterized by high fever, severe anemia, altered consciousness, repeated convulsions, respiratory distress, hypoglycemia, metabolic acidosis, acute kidney injury, and circulatory compromise. It requires urgent hospitalization, intravenous antimalarial therapy, supportive care, and close monitoring to prevent organ failure and death. Lower respiratory tract infection is an infection involving the bronchi, bronchioles, or lungs, commonly presenting with fever, productive or dry cough, fast breathing, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and abnormal chest findings. Causes include viruses, bacteria, or fungi. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate antimicrobial and supportive treatment improve outcomes.
Background
Muhammed 9 years old boy, lives with his parents and siblings in a remote community in Bauchi State, in a two-room apartment. His mother struggles to pay his school fees, and the family survives on just 5,000 naira a month. A hospital bill is far beyond their reach, so they reached out for help. Nine-year-old Muhammed was well until two days ago, when a fever set in and quickly became high grade, alongside a pounding headache, continuous cough, and abdominal pain. He was brought to the hospital, diagnosed with Severe Malaria and a Lower Respiratory Tract Infection, and admitted for urgent treatment.
Medical history
When Muhammed, a 9yo male child visited our facility, patient was evaluated and diagnosed with Severe Malaria and LRTI. He was immediately admitted for urgent medical care in our facility. Treatment commenced with injection antimalarials like Artesunate, injection antibiotics like Ceftriaxone and other supportive care. Patient became stable after 4 days of hospital stay, fever stopped as well as headache and abdominal pain. Coughing ceased. Patient was given some drugs for home treatment. The family is grateful to Helpster Charity for the free medical treatment.
Prognosis
Muhammed was diagnosed with severe malaria requiring urgent admission, intravenous antimalarial therapy, supportive care, close monitoring, and prompt management of complications to reduce morbidity and mortality. Delayed intervention increases risks of neurological deficits, organ failure, severe anemia, and death while prognosis with early intervention is good. The patient was also having lower respiratory tract infection requiring appropriate hydration, supportive care, and close monitoring for respiratory deterioration. Prognosis is good with early and effective treatment. Delayed management would have led to respiratory failure, sepsis, prolonged hospitalization, or death. Muhammed is recuperating.
