Lesley is a one-year-old girl and the youngest of three children. She lives with her family in modest circumstances, with her mother serving as the sole breadwinner through small-scale farming, earning about KSh 2,700 per month. This limited income is insufficient to meet the family's basic needs. They live in a single rented room, share a pit latrine with neighbouring households, and rely on a community borehole for drinking water. Lesley became unwell while at home, developing severe cough, chest indrawing, chest pain, wheezing, and increasing difficulty breathing. Her condition gradually worsened, but her mother was unable to seek medical care because of financial hardship. A neighbour whose child had previously received assistance through Helpster Charity connected the family with a Helpster volunteer. The volunteer referred Lesley to Mechimeru Health Centre, where she received prompt medical assessment, treatment, and free healthcare through the support of Helpster Charity, enabling her to access the care she urgently needed.

The treatment process for Lesley, who has been diagnosed with severe malaria, involves immediate hospitalization and the prompt administration of intravenous antimalarial medication, followed by oral antimalarial drugs once the condition improves. Supportive care may include intravenous fluids, fever management, blood transfusion if severe anemia is present, oxygen therapy if needed, and careful monitoring of blood glucose, kidney function, and other vital signs. With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, most patients recover fully and gradually regain their strength over several weeks. However, recovery depends on the severity of the illness and how quickly treatment is started, as delayed or inadequate treatment can lead to serious complications such as brain injury, kidney failure, severe anemia, or death.

Lesley has been diagnosed with severe pneumonia, a life-threatening condition requiring urgent hospital treatment. She is receiving appropriate antibiotics, supportive care, oxygen therapy as needed, and close monitoring. With timely diagnosis and prompt treatment, her prognosis is favourable, and she is expected to make a full recovery. However, delayed or interrupted treatment could lead to respiratory failure, bloodstream infection, lung complications, or death.
