If untreated, chronic PID can lead to serious problems like infertility, ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy that occurs outside the womb), chronic pelvic pain, and abscess formation in the pelvic organs. Treatment typically includes a course of antibiotics to treat the infection. It's important for sexual partners to be treated as well to prevent reinfection. In severe cases or when complications arise, surgery might be necessary.
