Jibrin T., 1

Jibrin is a 3-month-old baby living with his parents and two siblings, diagnosed with communicating hydrocephalus after developing progressive head enlargement since birth. He has also experienced recurrent vomiting and delayed development, with his parents moving from one hospital to another in search of help. His father is unemployed, his mother is a full-time housewife, and the family survives on about ₦5,000 from occasional side jobs and support from friends and relatives. They cannot afford the treatment he urgently needs. A 3mo male infant presents with progressive head enlargement since birth, history of recurrent vomiting but no convulsions. Child has not achieved developmental milestones (Neck control). On examination, remarkable craniofacial disproportion with occipitofrontal circumference-65cm. Prominent scalp veins, sunset eyes with equivocal confrontational test. Patient was diagnosed with Communicating Hydrocephalus. The family were moving from one hospital to another looking for help until they met with Yahaya a volunteer who brought them to our facility to be helped by Helpster Charity.

Jibrin is a 1 year old boy a severe hydrocephalus requiring urgent intervention, because If left untreated, communicating hydrocephalus in a one-year-old child can lead to permanent brain damage, severe developmental delays, and permanent vision loss due to prolonged high pressure inside the skull. Additionally, the baby may experience structural complications like rapid abnormal head enlargement, chronic vomiting, and epileptic seizures. The prognosis is generally good when communicating hydrocephalus is diagnosed early and treated appropriately. Jibrin's case needs urgent medical intervention.
