Tohidur Islam is a cheerful and determined 9-year-old boy who loves playing outdoor games with his friends and dreams of restoring his eyesight so he can continue his education and one day support his family. His father, Md. Alauddin, is chronically ill, and the family of six survives on only BDT 7,500 per month while also caring for his physically disabled brother, Saiful Islam, making the cost of specialized treatment impossible to afford. Tohidur previously underwent surgery for a dermoid cyst at a government hospital when he was five years old, but the swelling gradually returned over the past two years, worsening his vision and causing deep concern for his mother, Sheuly Akter, and his sisters, Shima Akter and Najmun Nahar. The family learned about Helpster Charity through Dr. Nazrul Islam of icddr,b, giving them hope during this difficult time. Without urgent treatment, the recurrent cyst may continue to enlarge, causing permanent vision loss, spreading into the deeper tissues around the eye, and in severe cases extending toward the cranial structures, leading to life-threatening complications and permanent disability.

With Helpster’s support, Tohidur Islam was admitted to East West Medical College & Hospital on July 08, 2026, for the treatment of a recurrent dermoid cyst in his right eye. Doctors stabilized him with intravenous medications including Ceftriaxone and Flucloxin before successfully performing his primary excision surgery on July 12, 2026, followed by two corrective procedures to evacuate a hematoma and reconstruct his eyelid. After a carefully monitored recovery, he spent a total of 17 days in the hospital before being discharged on July 25, 2026. He returned home with a structured post-discharge care plan consisting of oral antibiotics, steroids, pain relievers, and Bactrocin ointment to ensure proper healing and prevent infection. The treatment successfully reconstructed his eyelid, freeing Tohidur from the large swelling and offering him a renewed chance to protect his sight and enjoy a normal, healthy childhood.

According to the treating doctor, surgical excision of the recurrent dermoid cyst, evacuation of the hematoma, and planned secondary eyelid closure are expected to remove the abnormal tissue, restore the normal position of the eyelid, and protect the vision of Tohidur Islam's right eye. With timely surgery, proper postoperative care, and regular follow-up, the swelling should resolve, the eye will heal gradually, and the risk of further recurrence and visual impairment will be significantly reduced. The treatment is also expected to improve both the function and appearance of the affected eye. However, if left untreated, the cyst may continue to enlarge, causing worsening eyelid deformity, progressive vision loss due to mechanical amblyopia, recurrent infection or bleeding, and permanent loss of vision in the right eye.
