Why is treatment sometimes done earlier than the payment?
When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

About infections
Precious has been diagnosed with severe pneumonia, a serious lung infection that causes inflammation of the air sacs (alveoli), which may fill with fluid or pus. This reduces the lungs' ability to exchange oxygen effectively, leading to symptoms such as difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, chest indrawing, fever, cough, and low oxygen levels in the blood. Severe pneumonia can result in respiratory distress and may become life-threatening if not treated promptly. It commonly requires urgent medical care, including oxygen therapy, antibiotics if a bacterial infection is suspected, supportive treatment, and close monitoring to prevent complications such as respiratory failure or sepsis.

Background
Precious is a one-year-old girl and the fourth-born child in a family of four. She lives with both her parents, who work hard to provide for the family despite significant financial hardship. Her mother earns a modest income of approximately KSh 2,800 per month from selling second-hand (Mitumba) clothes, which is the family's main source of livelihood. They live in a rented two-room house, share a pit latrine with neighboring households, and obtain drinking water from a community borehole. Their limited income makes it difficult to meet basic needs, including food, healthcare, and other household expenses. Two days before admission, Precious developed a high fever, wheezing, chest pain, rapid breathing, poor feeding, and increasing weakness. Her mother made every effort to seek medical care but was unable to afford treatment because of financial constraints. She therefore took Precious to Mechimeru Hospital, where she explained the family's situation to the facility in-charge. After assessment, the facility assured her that Precious would receive treatment under the support of Helpster Charity, allowing her to access the urgent medical care she required.
Medical history
The treatment process for Precious's severe pneumonia involves hospital admission for close monitoring, oxygen therapy to improve breathing, antibiotics if a bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed, intravenous fluids to maintain hydration, fever-reducing medication, and nutritional support. Her vital signs, oxygen levels, and response to treatment are monitored regularly. With timely and appropriate treatment, the infection is expected to resolve, breathing will improve, oxygen levels will return to normal, and Precious can make a full recovery. Early treatment also reduces the risk of serious complications such as respiratory failure, sepsis, or long-term lung damage.
Prognosis
The doctor's prognosis is that with prompt and appropriate treatment, Precious has a good chance of recovering fully and returning to normal daily activities. Treatment, including antibiotics (if the infection is bacterial), oxygen therapy, adequate fluids, and supportive care, is expected to improve her breathing, clear the lung infection, and prevent serious complications. However, if severe pneumonia is left untreated, the infection can worsen, leading to respiratory failure, sepsis, permanent lung damage, or even death.
