Samiya Akter, a 14-year-old girl, has been diagnosed with a fracture of the shaft of the left radius, a serious break in one of the main bones of the forearm. This type of fracture causes severe pain, swelling, and restricted movement of the affected arm and usually requires surgical stabilization to ensure proper bone alignment and healing. She has been advised to undergo Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) with a small Dynamic Compression Plate (DCP) under general anesthesia to restore normal function of her arm.

Background
Samiya Akter is a polite and determined 14-year-old girl who lives with her parents, younger brother, and elderly grandmother in a family of five, hoping to continue her education despite their difficult circumstances. Her father is the family's only earning member, working as a garments worker with a monthly income of approximately BDT 8,000, which is barely enough to cover food and other basic necessities, leaving the family unable to afford the cost of emergency surgery, hospitalization, medicines, and follow-up care. After learning about Helpster Charity through volunteer Masud Rana, the family sought assistance in the hope of restoring Samiya's health. Despite exhausting their limited resources, they cannot continue her treatment without financial support. Without timely surgery, the fractured bone may heal improperly, leading to permanent deformity, chronic pain, restricted movement of her left arm, and long-term disability that could affect her education and daily life.
Medical history
Samiya Akter was admitted to Narayanganj Poly Clinic General Hospital on 18/07/2026 with a fracture of the shaft of the left radius following an accidental injury. She underwent Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) with a Small DCP under general anaesthesia. After successful surgery, she received postoperative treatment, including pain management, wound care, medications, regular medical observation, and follow-up assessments. Her condition gradually improved, and she was discharged on 20/07/2026 with advice to continue prescribed medications, keep the operated limb protected, and attend scheduled follow-up visits for recovery.
Prognosis
The recommended treatment is Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) with a Small Dynamic Compression Plate (DCP) under General Anesthesia to realign the fractured radius, stabilize the bone, and promote proper healing. With timely surgery, appropriate pain management, physiotherapy, and regular follow-up, Samiya is expected to achieve good bone healing, regain normal strength and movement of her left arm, and return to her education and daily activities. If left untreated, the fracture may heal improperly (malunion) or fail to heal (non-union), leading to permanent deformity, chronic pain, restricted arm movement, reduced hand function, and long-term disability
