Mohammed R., 10

Mohammed Riaz is a bright, resilient, and determined 10-year-old refugee boy who dreams of continuing his education and becoming a teacher despite the many hardships his family faces. He lives with his parents and six siblings in a small bamboo-and-tarpaulin shelter in the refugee camp, where his father is the only earning member, working as a daily laborer with an income that is barely enough to provide food for the family, making specialized surgery completely unaffordable. As the severe pain and swelling in his left leg worsened, Mohammed lost the ability to walk, and doctors advised urgent surgery to prevent a pathological fracture and save the function of his leg. The family learned about Helpster Charity through volunteer Md Younus during a medical outreach at Kutubpalong, giving them hope when they had nowhere else to turn. Without timely surgery, the bone may fracture, leading to permanent disability, chronic pain, worsening deformity, loss of mobility, and the possibility of lifelong dependence on others, preventing Mohammed from pursuing the future he dreams of.

The orthopedic surgeons have advised urgent surgical treatment with curettage of the bone lesion, bone grafting, and stabilization of the affected bone with internal fixation (ORIF by Long DCP) under anesthesia to prevent fracture and preserve limb function. Following surgery, close monitoring, pain management, histopathological evaluation, rehabilitation, and regular follow-up will be required. With timely and appropriate treatment, the child has a good chance of significant recovery, pain relief, bone healing, and return to normal activities, although long-term follow-up may be necessary depending on the underlying cause of the lesion. However, if left untreated, the weakened bone may progress to a complete pathological fracture, severe deformity, chronic disability, infection, or progression of an underlying serious disease, potentially resulting in severe complications or even death.
