Aliyu Abatcha is a 2-year-old boy and the 5th child of 5 children. He lives with his parents in a one-bedroom house in Maiduguri, Borno State. His father, Abatcha Kyari, works as a bricklayer. His mother, Fatima Mustapha, is a full-time housewife caring for the children at home. The family’s total monthly income is about ₦30,000, which barely covers food, rent, and basic needs. With 5 children to care for and no extra support, they struggle to meet medical expenses. He was brought in by his mother with a 4-month history of a painless swelling around the umbilicus. The swelling increases in size on crying, coughing, or straining and reduces on lying down or with gentle pressure. There is no history of vomiting, abdominal distension, or features of obstruction. The child feeds well and is active.

Child received palliative treatment that will alleviate the pain and make him comfortable to continue his recovery pending when his case will be approved by Helpster for surgery. But we placed the child on 2weeks follow-up in order to keep track of the child’s recovery prior to the surgery.

Aliyu was diagnosed with Umbilical Hernia and needs surgery; if left untreated he risks incarceration, bowel obstruction, and strangulation, but the family cannot afford the cost of treatment. The overall prognosis for an inguinoscrotal hernia is very good with timely surgical repair, though large or neglected hernias carry higher risks of incarceration, bowel strangulation, and postoperative complications.
