Elvis is a two-year-old boy and the youngest of six children living with both parents in a rural village. When well, he is cheerful, sociable and enjoys playing hide-and-seek with his older siblings, to whom he is very attached. His father has no stable employment and depends on occasional casual jobs, while his mother cares for the children and maintains a small kitchen garden to supplement the household. Their limited income sometimes means the family cannot afford three meals a day, while also supporting five school-going children. During a Saturday outreach at a church in Nyakunguru Village, Elvis was brought by his mother and grandmother for medical attention. He appeared visibly ill, extremely weak and exhausted, with an ongoing high fever. His condition had deteriorated to the point that he was unable to stand or walk normally and was markedly less active than usual. Recognizing the seriousness of his condition, the team from Awasi Catholic Mission Health Centre, working in partnership with Helpster Charity, immediately referred him to the facility, where he was admitted for urgent assessment, treatment and close monitoring.

Elvis was admitted with a diagnosis of bronchopneumonia after presenting with symptoms consistent with a chest infection. On admission, he was started on ceftriaxone and gentamicin injection as part of treatment to control the infection and prevent further progression of the illness. He was closely monitored throughout his hospital stay for improvement in breathing, temperature, feeding, and general condition. He responded well to treatment, with gradual reduction in fever, improvement in activity, and stabilization of his overall condition. Over the course of admission, his symptoms improved steadily without complications, he was clinically stable, comfortably, and he was therefore discharged in good condition. He was sent home on amoxicillin and paracetamol to continue treatment and supportive care, with an expected good recovery.

Elvis was diagnosed with bronchopneumonia after presenting with persistent fever, marked weakness and deterioration to the point of being unable to stand or walk normally. At two years of age, the infection can progress rapidly, making admission for appropriate antibiotics, supportive care, hydration and close monitoring necessary. With timely treatment and a good clinical response, Elvis has a favourable prognosis, with full recovery expected.
