Cut wounds and soft tissue injury following an assault with a sharp object, resulting in damage to the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and muscle. The injury caused pain, bleeding, and carries a significant risk of infection and damage to underlying structures. Prompt medical management, including surgical intervention when indicated, is essential to prevent complications such as infection, scarring, chronic pain, loss of function, or permanent disability.

Background
Washington is the younger of two children and lives with his maternal grandmother following the death of both parents. His elder sister is training in tailoring. Washington left school after completing Class Eight and sitting the primary education examination, partly due to poor performance and the financial challenges that followed his parents’ deaths. He hopes to join a polytechnic and train as a plumber. His grandmother, a peasant farmer and primary caregiver, is currently bedridden and unable to provide adequately for the household. They rely largely on occasional assistance from an uncle who works as a tout in Siaya Town and live in a modest two-room rented house costing KES 500 per month. While returning from his routine morning run, Washington was reportedly attacked by four unknown men after he was unable to give them money. He sustained panga-cut injuries and was rescued by passersby, who contacted his uncle and helped take him to hospital. He received emergency care and was admitted for further treatment and monitoring. Washington responded well to treatment and was subsequently discharged in stable condition.
Medical history
Washington was admitted following a stabbing assault that resulted in severe blood loss and lacerations to the right upper arm. He received emergency wound care, bleeding control, suturing, blood transfusion, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, tranexamic acid, analgesics, and daily wound dressing. He responded well to treatment, was discharged in stable condition, and scheduled for follow-up at the surgical outpatient clinic.
Prognosis
Washington presented in hemorrhagic shock due to severe blood loss from a penetrating soft tissue injury. Prompt emergency treatment, including bleeding control and wound care, stabilized his condition and promoted healing. The intervention is expected to restore function of his dominant hand, reduce pain, prevent infection, and enable him to resume normal activities such as writing. Without timely treatment, he was at risk of death from hemorrhage, severe infection, and permanent loss of function of the affected limb.
