Selina E., 20

Selina is a hardworking and determined 20-year-old woman from Kanam in Lodwar, Turkana County. Raised in a modest household, she is known for her respectful nature and willingness to support her family with daily responsibilities. She enjoys weaving mats, collecting firewood, cooking, singing in church and participating in community activities. Selina hopes to build a stable future for her family and eventually become financially independent through a small business. Her pregnancy had progressed well during the early months, and she looked forward to welcoming her baby. However, during labour, the medical team detected signs of fetal distress (non-reassuring fetal status), indicating that the baby might not be coping well with labour and could be at risk if delivery was delayed. Given the urgency of the situation, continuing with normal delivery was considered unsafe. The doctors therefore recommended an emergency Caesarean section as the safest option to deliver the baby promptly and reduce the risk of serious complications to the baby and mother.

After Selina underwent an emergency Caesarean section, both she and her baby were closely monitored by the medical team to ensure they were recovering well. She received pain medication, antibiotics to prevent infection, intravenous fluids, and regular wound care. Nurses also encouraged her to begin gentle movement, maintain good nutrition, and breastfeed her baby as soon as it was safe to do so. The baby was carefully assessed after birth and continued to receive routine newborn care. With the support of the healthcare team and her family, Selina regained her strength day by day. Her surgical wound healed well, and she was discharged home in stable condition together with her healthy baby. She continues to attend postnatal clinic appointments and is expected to make a full recovery while caring for her newborn with renewed hope for the future.

The attending doctors determined that Selina required an emergency Caesarean section because the baby was showing signs of non-reassuring fetal status (fetal distress), making a normal delivery unsafe if there was any further delays. The surgery was performed promptly to protect the lives of both mother and baby. Following the successful operation, Selina's condition became stable, and she is recovering well. Her prognosis is good, provided she continues with postnatal follow-up appointments, takes her prescribed medications, maintains proper nutrition, and allows adequate time for healing
