Winnie A., 32

Winnie is a 32-year-old mother with a physical disability since birth. She lives with her husband and child in a single-room mud-walled house. Having never attended school and being unable to work, she depends largely on her husband’s irregular menial jobs, well-wishers and support from church members for basic needs. During a routine visit, her well-wisher, Quinter, noticed that Winnie was unusually withdrawn, persistently tired and generally unwell. She accompanied her to a health facility, where pregnancy was confirmed and Winnie was enrolled in antenatal care. Quinter continued accompanying her for ANC visits. One evening, she found Winnie experiencing severe abdominal pain and repeated diarrhoea and rushed her to the facility, where she was found to be in labour. Despite monitoring, labour became prolonged and failed to progress, putting mother and baby at risk. Winnie was referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital and underwent a successful emergency Caesarean section. Unable to raise the hospital bill, Quinter contacted Helpster Charity through a referral from a Community Health Volunteer, seeking assistance for Winnie and her newborn.

Winnie was taken for an emergency caesarean surgery, the surgery was a success and she was taken to the post -op ward. While in the ward she was administered ceftriaxone,flagyl, morphine, among other drugs. Her catheter was removed after 2 days, and ambulation encouraged. The dressing on her surgical site was removed after 72 hrs. She was able to respond well to medication, and she was eventually discharged on orals. A follow up clinic was booked for her to ensure she was healing well

Winnie a 32-year-old woman diagnosed with prolonged labour secondary to cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD) and scheduled for an emergency Caesarean section has a guarded but favorable prognosis if the surgery is performed promptly. Prolonged labour and CPD increase the risk of maternal complications such as uterine rupture, postpartum hemorrhage, infection, dehydration, and fetal distress. Her pre-existing physical disability may further increase the risk of anesthetic, positioning, mobility, and postoperative recovery challenges. However, timely emergency Caesarean delivery significantly reduces the risk of serious maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Prognosis is good
