When a case is urgent and vital, hospitals often proceed with delivering medical care right away to save a life, even before the finalisation of admission procedures. Usually, when this happens, hospitals put the bill on our credit until the funds are transferred to their accounts. That’s why the chronology can sometimes be in disorder.

Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a long-term infection of the middle ear that results in the continuous discharge of pus or fluid from the ear canal. This condition typically occurs when an acute ear infection, such as acute otitis media, fails to resolve completely and becomes chronic. It is commonly associated with symptoms such as ear pain, hearing loss, and recurrent ear discharge.

Background
Sam is an energetic 8-year-old boy from Tbong Khmum province. He lives with his parents and his two-year-old brother in a rural area surrounded by farms. Sam's parents work hard to support the family by growing vegetables on their small plot of land, and they also raise a cow for milk and chickens. Vegetables are a big part of their diet, and they trade any extra produce at the local market for other essentials. Sam is currently in grade two and loves learning the Khmer language. He has a dream of becoming a teacher when he grows up. At home, he enjoys playing with his little brother, toy cars, and his favorite dishes include fried fish and soup.
Medical history
At the suggestion of a local hospital, Sam Oun and his family traveled several hours for a consultation and surgery to correct his hearing difficulties. This was a crucial step for Sam, as his symptoms could have led to more serious issues, including permanent hearing loss. After several nights in the hospital, the surgery was done successfully, and he returned home. To minimize any risk of re-infection, Sam used antibiotic drops and returned to the hospital in a week to have his stitches removed. The surgery made a significant difference in his life, helping him to live more comfortably and improving his hearing and communication. He looked forward to returning in a month for a post-operative hearing test, knowing that he would no longer have to miss school; he could participate in all his classes without hearing difficulties. Sam and his family expressed their deep gratitude to Helpster Charity donors and CSC for their support during this journey. Their kindness made a lasting impact on Sam's life, and they felt a renewed sense of hope for the future.
Prognosis
CSOM can lead to persistent inflammation and damage to the structures of the middle ear, including the eardrum and the tiny bones responsible for conducting sound. Treatment may involve antibiotics to control infection, cleaning of the ear canal, and in some cases, surgical intervention to repair any structural damage or to remove infected tissue. Without proper treatment, CSOM can lead to complications such as hearing loss, mastoiditis (infection of the mastoid bone), and even permanent damage to the ear structures. Therefore, it is important to seek medical attention if symptoms of CSOM persist or recur.
