About infections
Baby of Adiba Akter Maya has been diagnosed with Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (MAS) with Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) and mild Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE-I). Meconium Aspiration Syndrome occurs when meconium is inhaled into the lungs during birth, causing lung irritation and severe breathing difficulty. Respiratory Distress Syndrome further affects the baby’s ability to breathe effectively, while mild HIE-I indicates that the baby experienced reduced oxygen supply around the time of birth, affecting brain function. The baby’s severe respiratory distress and lethargy are consistent with these conditions and require close neonatal assessment.

Background
Baby of Adiba Akter Maya is a newborn who developed severe respiratory distress shortly after birth and required NICU care. His father is the sole regular earner, working as a delivery man for approximately USD 73 per month, while his mother is a homemaker, and his grandparents can provide only limited support through occasional farming work. The family learned about Helpster Charity through a volunteer at Dhaka Medical College and sought assistance because their limited income cannot cover the cost of intensive neonatal treatment. The baby was diagnosed with meconium aspiration syndrome, respiratory distress syndrome, and mild hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE-I), requiring oxygen support, antibiotics, and close monitoring. Without timely treatment, severe breathing difficulty and low oxygen levels could worsen, potentially causing serious brain or organ damage and becoming life-threatening.
Medical history
The baby was admitted to Olympus Hospital on 31 July 2026 at 7:44 AM with severe respiratory distress caused by meconium aspiration, along with respiratory distress syndrome and mild HIE. He received NICU care, oxygen support, antibiotics, and other supportive treatment, with close monitoring of his condition. Over the 9-day hospital stay, his breathing improved, the infection was controlled, and his overall condition became stable. He was discharged on 9 August 2026 at 1:45 PM with advice for breastfeeding, prescribed medicines, proper hygiene, warmth, and regular follow-up.
Prognosis
According to the doctor, NICU care with appropriate treatment, infection control, correction of metabolic abnormalities, and close monitoring is expected to improve the newborn’s respiratory condition and overall stability. With timely management, the baby may recover from the respiratory distress and can be shifted from the NICU to the ward once clinically improved. If treatment is delayed or not provided, severe respiratory distress, infection, and metabolic complications may worsen, leading to dangerously low oxygen levels, organ or brain injury, and potentially life-threatening complications.
