Severe malaria complicated by bronchopneumonia is a serious medical condition in which a severe malaria infection, usually caused by Plasmodium falciparum, occurs together with bronchopneumonia, an infection and inflammation affecting the small airways and surrounding areas of the lungs. The combination can cause high fever, weakness, cough, difficulty breathing, poor feeding, and reduced oxygen levels. It requires prompt antimalarial treatment, appropriate antibiotics, supportive care, and close monitoring to prevent complications.

Background
Suleiman is a 5-year-old boy from Amshi Village who has faced significant hardship from a young age. He lost his mother to illness and now lives under the care of his aunt. His father works as a Fadama farmer, earning approximately ₦5,000, which is barely enough to support the family’s basic needs. They live in a modest single-room mud house and struggle financially to meet everyday expenses, including healthcare. Despite these challenges, Suleiman has a strong ambition to become a doctor when he grows up so that he can help save vulnerable lives and support children and families facing difficulties like his own. His illness placed an additional financial burden on the family, making access to charitable medical support especially important.
Medical history
Suleiman was promptly admitted and treated for severe malaria complicated by bronchopneumonia. He received IV Artesunate for severe malaria, IV Ceftriaxone and Metronidazole for the respiratory infection, Paracetamol to control fever and discomfort, and IV fluids to maintain hydration. Oxygen therapy was provided when clinically indicated, with close monitoring of his temperature, breathing, oxygen saturation, and vital signs. Suleiman responded well to treatment. His fever subsided, breathing improved, cough reduced, and his appetite and activity gradually returned. He completed the appropriate antimalarial and antibiotic treatment and was discharged in stable condition. His caregivers were advised to complete all medications, maintain adequate nutrition and hydration, and attend follow-up appointments to ensure complete recovery.
Prognosis
Doctor’s Opinion Suleiman presented with severe malaria complicated by bronchopneumonia, requiring urgent antimalarial treatment, appropriate antibiotics, respiratory support, and close monitoring. He responded well to treatment, with improvement in fever, breathing, appetite, and general condition. Prognosis With immediate intensive care, including intravenous antimalarials, targeted antibiotics, and respiratory support, the prognosis is favourable, leading to full recovery for most patients. However, if treatment is delayed, this dual infection carries a poor and highly critical prognosis, rapidly escalating to severe respiratory failure, multi-organ damage, or death
