Ashlyne was diagnosed with Malaria and an Upper Respiratory Tract Infection. Severe malaria occurs when infections are complicated by serious organ failures or abnormalities in the patient's blood or metabolism. Upper Respiratory Tract Infections primarily affect the upper part of the respiratory system, which includes the nose, throat, and sometimes the sinuses and ears. Common URTIs include: Common cold, leading to symptoms like a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, and sometimes a low-grade fever. Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinus cavities, often associated with nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, and thick nasal discharge. Pharyngitis (sore throat), or otitis media: an ear infection that can cause ear pain, fluid drainage from the ear, and hearing problems.

Background
Ashlyne is a joyful fifteen-year-old girl. She aspires to become a pilot when she grows up. She takes her studies seriously and is very active in class. In her free time, Ashlyne enjoys playing with her friends in the field. A few days ago, she went to the hospital complaining of fever, dizziness, and a sore throat that were not relieved by pain relievers.
Medical history
Ashley was brought to the hospital with complains of fever, dizziness and sore throat which had lasted for three days. She was assessed and noted to be severely ill, therefore had to be admitted to be given medication as an in-patient. While in the ward she was given intravenous fluids and other medication for a period of 4 days. She recovered well after medications given.
Prognosis
Malaria should be treated promptly with the use of antimalarial drugs. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications and even death. It can result in organ failure, severe anemia, neurological issues, and in some cases, prove fatal, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial for preventing these life-threatening consequences. If an upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) is not treated, it can weaken the immune system and the body's natural defenses. This can make it easier for other infections, such as bacterial sinusitis or ear infections, to develop as secondary complications. If the URTI is caused by a contagious virus (e.g., the common cold or influenza), untreated individuals can continue to spread the infection to others, potentially leading to outbreaks in close-contact settings like schools or workplaces.
