A furuncle, commonly known as a boil, is a painful infection of a hair follicle and the surrounding skin tissue. The affected area appears as a tender, red, and swollen bump on the skin, the furuncle can be painful, especially when touched or pressed.

Background
Peter is an eight-year-old boy who loves to play but is also serious about his schoolwork. His favorite subject is Swahili language. Peter loves to play with his friends and always finds something to turn into an object to play with. Two months ago, he started getting boils in his armpits that would go away for a few weeks, then burst with pus and appear on other parts of his body. Because of this, he is in constant pain and discomfort.
Medical history
The child was discharged and prescribed additional medication to continue at home: Flucloxacillin 250mg capsules, IBUCAP Forte (a combination of ibuprofen and paracetamol, 1 capsule three times daily) The child had been suffering from multiple painful furuncles, which caused significant discomfort and affected his self-esteem. He was treated with antibiotics and has since recovered well—he is now healthy, playful, and performing excellently in school.
Prognosis
The doctor concluded that the boils were the result of bacterial contamination, which could lead to abscess formation and the spread of infection to neighboring tissues. When the furuncle is large, recurrent, or accompanied by signs of systemic infection, such as fever or swollen lymph nodes, oral antibiotics may be prescribed to help clear the infection.
