Recently, he came to the hospital complaining of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting, accompanied by a headache and yellowing of the eyes.
Medical history
Recently, Emmanuel came to the hospital complaining of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting, accompanied by a headache and yellowing of the eyes. Emmanuel had severe malaria with anemia and was treated in the ward until was stable and was discharged The anaemia was due to the severe malaria and he was given haematinics to continue taking at home. The hospital did weekly follow ups and confirmed that the haemoglobin level in the blood was back to normal
Prognosis
Malaria should be treated promptly with the use of antimalarial drugs. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications and even death. It can result in organ failure, severe anemia, neurological issues, and in some cases, prove fatal, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial for preventing these life-threatening consequences. Jaundice can lead to elevated levels of bilirubin, which can cause severe itching and irreversible liver damage. In some cases, especially in newborns, severe jaundice can lead to brain damage and other neurological disorders.
