1. Pneumonia is an infection in your lungs caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. Pneumonia causes your lung tissue to swell (inflammation) and can cause fluid or pus in your lungs. Bacterial pneumonia is usually more severe than viral pneumonia, which often resolves on its own. Pneumonia can affect one or both lungs. 2. Background
Denzel is a young boy, always looking forward to when he will run out to go and play. It is not quite easy having him stay in the house because he likes to run around with his friends. He presented to the hospital with cough, running nose, fever and headache.
Medical history
The patient presented with complaints of headache, cough, runny nose, and hotness of the body. No premedication had been taken. On examination, the patient was in fair general condition with normal vital signs. Laboratory tests showed elevated lymphocytes and low hemoglobin levels, while the malaria test was negative. The diagnosis was pneumonia. Treatment included a five-day course of antibiotic syrup, cough syrup, and analgesic syrup. The patient was then discharged to continue recovery at home. He returned to the hospital five days after discharge and was confirmed to be doing well.
Prognosis
1. For most children, the prognosis is good. Viral pneumonia tends to resolve without treatment. Long-term sequelae are rare. However, both staphylococcal and varicella pneumonia have guarded outcomes in children. Some children can succumb due to untreated pneumonia 2. Any severe or untreated bacterial infection can trigger an exaggerated immune response called sepsis This condition can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death.
