Umbilical hernia is a swelling that can be seen at the umbilicus, or the belly button. It occurs when there is a defect and failure to close a part of the abdominal wall at the umbilical region, thus allowing fluid and parts of the intestine to push through the defect. Large defects, like Muhammad's should be repaired and closed by surgery.

Background
Fatima is an eight-year-old girl from a financially disadvantaged family. She is cheerful and loves to read. She is deeply saddened that she cannot attend school due to her health condition. At the age of two months, a swelling in the umbilical region was noticed in Fatima. This swelling has persisted for over seven years and continues to grow, causing pain. However, the pain subsides after taking pain medication. She was evaluated and diagnosed with a significant umbilical hernia. A plan was made for an exploratory laparotomy and hernia repair.
Medical history
Fatima is an eight-year-old girl from a financially disadvantaged family. She is cheerful and loves to read. She is deeply saddened that she cannot attend school due to her health condition. At the age of two months, a swelling in the umbilical region was noticed in Fatima. This swelling has persisted for over seven years and continues to grow, causing pain. However, the pain subsides after taking pain medication. She was evaluated and diagnosed with a significant umbilical hernia. A plan was made for an exploratory laparotomy and hernia repair. She was admitted for surgery on 23rd March,2024.The surgery was successful and patient is stable and feeling much better.She was discharged on 26th March,2024. Fatima and her family are very happy following the successful surgery.
Prognosis
Without intervention, the hernia may continue to grow in size, causing increased discomfort, pain, and a noticeable bulge at the umbilicus. In severe cases, the protruding tissue can become trapped or strangulated, which is a medical emergency. Strangulation occurs when the blood supply to the herniated tissue is compromised, leading to severe pain, nausea, vomiting, and possible tissue damage or necrosis. Prompt surgical repair is typically recommended for umbilical hernias to prevent these complications and ensure the safety and well-being of the affected individual.
