Background
Shawn is a two-year-old boy from a low-income family. He is shy around strangers and feels comfortable with familiar people. Over the past two days, he has been experiencing a high fever and vomiting, which started yesterday. He holds his stomach and bends down in tears, indicating he may also be experiencing stomach pain.
Medical history
Shawn came to the hospital with a sudden high fever, stomach pain, vomiting, and episodes of severe diarrhea. After laboratory tests, the doctors confirmed an hookworm infestation togeter with malaria, he was put on treatment, including IV fluids, malaria medication, and pain relief and antehelmintics The patient responded well to the treatment and was discharged in stable condition. A follow-up call was made a week later, and it was confirmed that the patient had fully recovered and was doing well at home. A month after he visited the hospital as he had been informed, to confirm that the hookworm infestation was over and it was confirmed that he did not have any parasites
Prognosis
Malaria should be treated promptly with the use of antimalarial drugs. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications and even death. It can result in organ failure, severe anemia, neurological issues, and in some cases, prove fatal, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial for preventing these life-threatening consequences.
