Jensen was diagnosed with an Upper Respiratory Tract Infection and Malaria. Upper Respiratory Tract Infections primarily affect the upper part of the respiratory system, which includes the nose, throat, and sometimes the sinuses and ears. Common URTIs include: Common cold, leading to symptoms like a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, and sometimes a low-grade fever. Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinus cavities, often associated with nasal congestion, facial pain or pressure, and thick nasal discharge. Pharyngitis (sore throat), or otitis media: an ear infection that can cause ear pain, fluid drainage from the ear, and hearing problems.s primarily affect the upper part of the respiratory system, which includes the nose, throat, and sometimes the sinuses and ears. Background
Jensen is a cheerful girl who loves dancing with her friends both at school and at home. She also enjoys singing and is often heard humming tunes while assisting with household chores. She aspires to be a teacher when she grows up. The day before her hospital visit, Jensen began experiencing headaches and abdominal pain, accompanied by vomiting. By the next day, her condition deteriorated as the vomiting intensified, leading to severe dehydration after several episodes.
Medical history
Jensen was brought to the facility where she was assessed by the doctor and later sent to the laboratory for further tests Jensen was later admitted for further management and assessment After the diagnosis of malaria and upper respiratory tract infection and bacterial infection was made, Jensen was given intravenous antibiotics and artesunate for malaria. Within 24 hrs She was able to contain orals, therefore maintained with AL 3 tabs twice a day for 3 days, Tabs PCM 1g thrice a days for 3 days and Metronidazole 400mg 3 times a day for 2 days She responded well to medications
Prognosis
If an Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI) is not treated, it can weaken the immune system and the body's natural defenses. This can make it easier for other infections, such as bacterial sinusitis or ear infections, to develop as secondary complications. If the URTI is caused by a contagious virus (e.g., the common cold or influenza), untreated individuals can continue to spread the infection to others, potentially leading to outbreaks in close-contact settings like schools or workplaces. Malaria should be treated promptly with the use of antimalarial drugs. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications and even death. It can result in organ failure, severe anemia, neurological issues, and in some cases, prove fatal, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial for preventing these life-threatening consequences.
