Hauwa is a five-year-old girl living with her parents, who are internally displaced persons (IDPs). She is the sixth child out of eight siblings and does not attend school, understanding only Kanuri language. A week ago, she developed severe stomach pain, vomiting, and catarrh, which caused her sleepless nights. Due to financial constraints, her parents were unable to take her to the hospital until they received a Helpster Flyer during a community outreach.

Hauwa Ali was brought to Nakowa Specialist Hospital after showing severe symptoms of malaria, enteric fever, gastroenteritis, and acute respiratory infections. Her treatment began with antimalarial medications to combat the parasitic infection, along with antibiotics to address the bacterial cause of enteric fever and respiratory infections. After taking her medications as prescribed, Hauwa’s condition steadily improved, and she made a full recovery, regaining her strength and returning to normal activities.

Malaria should be treated promptly with the use of antimalarial drugs. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications and even death. It can result in organ failure, severe anemia, neurological issues, and in some cases, prove fatal, making early diagnosis and treatment crucial for preventing these life-threatening consequences. Gastroenteritis can cause significant loss of fluids and electrolytes through vomiting and diarrhea. Without proper treatment, dehydration can become severe and require urgent medical attention.
